Heat Illness

Heat Illness Prevention - Sandhills Valley Mavericks

Our student athletes' health and safety is of the utmost concern during the summer and fall seasons. As Athletic Director I want our community to be aware of steps that we are taking to ensure everything is being done according to guidelines set forth by the NSAA (Nebraska Schools Activities Association) and the NFHS (National Federation of State High School Associations)

We are following the guidelines set forth by the NFHS position statement regarding Heat-Acclimatization and Heat-Illness prevention as stated here:

And here:

Student athletes will follow a strict protocol based on best practices and NSAA guidelines.

The following resources are also available to our student-athletes and coaches:

  • Training on EAP (Emergency Action Plan) procedures in the event of a heat-related illness which includes but are not limited to:

    • Consistent and thorough reminders of the importance of hydration before, during and after physical activity

    • Use of WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) Monitor

    • Location and access to use of cold water immersion tub

    • Procedures for cool down process in the event of a heat related illness during practice - to include notifying EMS as soon as possible.

    • Access to shaded areas

    • Access to Hydration Station

    • Access to fully functional Ice Machine

    • Location of alternate practice facility with additional shade if necessary

    • Coaches training in identifying potential heat-illness related emergency

On Monday evening - July 29th 2024 I personally conducted a walkthrough training for our Sandhills Valley Maverick football players and coaches.

Cross Country runners will be receiving the same training during their first official practice on August 12th 2024.
